At the beginning of each new year, Phenom Hoops works to assemble a series of articles centered around unsigned senior prospects. Last season, hundreds of players from North Carolina went on to play at the Division I, II, III or NAIA levels, and that number looks likely to continue increasing with the current senior class. Typically, we take a closer look at guys who are overlooked and underrated, and today’s edition will highlight CJ Vaughn of Winston-Salem Christian.

We’ve seen Vaughn in every possible setting, recently stating, Moving onto a player who possesses an array of appealing qualities, CJ Vaughn. He’s a quick, athletic guard prospect with a nice combination of IQ, motor, and two-way ability. Vaughn showcased a polished scoring arsenal from all three levels, consistently mixing it up and finding success with or without the ball in his hands. He attacked the basket and finished or set up others whenever possible, but also converted jumpers with consistency. Vaughn defended with purpose, forced numerous turnovers, and pushed transition play on a frequent basis. Next in his development process is working on his ability to move without the ball, as it would allow him to find even more scoring opportunities as a cutter/spot-up threat. Coach Hodges on Vaughn: “CJ is an athletic guard with a high motor and good combination of high-level skills. Played with great energy and adapted to several different roles on the court. CJ had a good attitude and accepted any coaching feedback.” Vaughn proved to be an asset during his time at camp and should be an x-factor for Winston-Salem Christian throughout the upcoming season. “

It probably doesn’t take spectators to see that Vaughn clearly possesses the makings of a useful piece at the next level. He’s an athletic, shot-making guard who can produce in a variety of different settings and situations. Vaughn scores the ball at a healthy rate from all levels, displays solid passing instincts, and is capable of playing with or without the ball. He’s able to finish with craftiness or above the rim, and makes his presence consistently felt in transition. Vaughn is a tough, scrappy defender with the necessary strength, quickness, and instincts to cause problems for opposing ball-handlers. Furthermore, he’s always been a talented player, but he’s taken clear steps to become more efficient and well-rounded over the recent years. Vaughn has the tools to be an asset for various programs.
