At the beginning of each new year, Phenom Hoops works to assemble a series of articles centered around unsigned senior prospects. Last season, hundreds of players from North Carolina went on to play at the Division I, II, III or NAIA levels, and that number looks likely to continue increasing with the current senior class. Typically, we take a closer look at guys who are overlooked and underrated, and today’s edition will highlight Cameron Gales of Thomas Jefferson High School.

We’ve seen Gales a considerable amount over the last twelve months, recently stating, Next, we look at a player who possesses a very steady, balanced identity, Cameron Gales. He’s a smart, steady, well-rounded guard prospect who knows how to run a team and assert himself as a scorer form all levels. Gales is an unselfish decision-maker who understands how to toggle between getting others involved and applying scoring pressure. He defends his position, rebounds well for his size, and is capable of making an impact with or without the ball in his hands. Next in his development process is working to get stronger, as it would make him a better finisher through contact. Coach Respass on Gales: “Cam is a strong guard with a good frame and good athletic ability. He can knock down a shot from the outside with good-looking form. He can work on his finishing ability and his ability to play through contact in the paint.” Gales enjoyed a strong showing at camp and should be a target for various college coaches entering his upcoming senior season.”

Since then, it’s easy to see what makes Gales an obvious target for next-level programs. He’s a balanced floor general who leads, sets up others, and scores the ball at a healthy rate from all levels. Gales plays with nice pace and is comfortable creating offensive opportunities for himself and others. He handles the ball effectively, displays great feel, and makes quality decisions off the bounce. That being said, Gales is also a steady defender and willing rebounder. He knows how to play within a role or expand his production to burden a heavy load. Given everything he’s shown, it’s surprising more schools haven’t gotten involved.
