Statistical analysis is an excellent tool for evaluating prospects, as it gives a numerical measure to line up against the eye test. When thinking about the top playmakers in the state, several names come to mind but not enough folks seem to mention Derrick Eley within that group. Although he plays with a notable teammate and in a known suburb of Charlotte, it’s simply being overlooked that he ranks third across the state in assists per game (7.6). Let’s look a little bit closer at his game and his overall value to Hopewell…

It’s worth noting that Eley took a massive leap between his junior and senior seasons, elevating his APG from 2.1 to 7.6. The insanity of this statement is accompanied by the sheer fact that no other player within the top 20 (per MaxPreps) has taken a jump of that magnitude. This season, Eley is averaging 11.4 PPG, 6.9 RPG, 7.6 APG, and 3.4 SPG with 55/32/58 shooting splits. He’s amassed two double-doubles and five games of 13 or more points. While so much of the attention goes to his running mate, it’s clear that Eley possesses next-level ability.

The Titans currently sit at 11-3 with several strong wins and two of their three losses coming against top-tier squads. Between the talent, acceptance of roles, and Coach Goodson on the sidelines, it’s easy to see why this group is enjoying success. The next ten games will be a massive test for their group, but this period should afford college coaches an extended stretch to evaluate Eley and his cohorts.
