Each and every time Phenom Hoop Report gets to report or sees a commitment from a player we have seen over the years, it is always a fantastic day.  It is great to see players achieve their goal to play at the next level and it is such a great accomplishment for that player.

Here is the latest commitment.

Player: Marcus Willis
Class: 2022
Committed to: Virginia University-Lynchburg

What Was Said by Phenom Hoops:

'Yes, some will look at his 5'10 frame but I've said it before and will say it again… sometimes you just have to look past certain factors and see that a player can simply play and produce on the court.  Willis did that consistently all throughout the weekend. When you watch his game, there might have not been a quicker guard on the floor as I didn't see too many defenders showing that they could stay in front of him.  Willis displayed a tremendous ability in operating in the halfcourt, using his speed to get by defenders and create for himself, or push the pace in transition and aggressive attack or facilitate.'

'Sometimes flashiness isn't necessary when it comes to effectively running a team on both sides of the ball, and Marcus Willis is a prime example of that notion. He was the youngest prospect on a senior-laden roster and arguably looked as poised and mature as any floor general on display. Everything Willis brings to the team is fundamental and straightforward, which is actually somewhat uncommon these days. He's a smart, unselfish point guard with the ability to consistently get downhill and make plays for others. Willis is a reliable scorer from all levels and understands how to assert himself within the flow of the game, rather than just hunting for his shot. He's a great defender, decision-maker, and overall floor general that made his surrounding teammates better throughout the weekend. Willis should definitely be able to stand out to college coaches during the upcoming season.'

'In starting with Willis, he should be a proven entity to college coaches at this point. He's a balanced floor general with a quick first step and the ability to apply scoring pressure or set up others on a consistent basis. Offensively, Willis can fill it up in a hurry when necessary'but also shows clear emphasis on setting the floor and spreading the ball around. He makes smart decisions with the ball in his hands and does a nice job of running a team as a primary ball-handler. Willis is also a scrappy defender with an understanding of how to force turnovers and reliably push the break in transition. He also battles to make his presence felt on the glass. Willis just received an offer from UNC Pembroke, so it'll be interesting to follow the remainder of his recruitment.'

'2022 Marcus Willis (Mint Hill Lakers): Willis continues to be a strong presence in leading the charge and being an effective guard on both ends of the floor. You can't help but like his defensive mentality on the court, playing hard and scrappy, really getting into the defender. Offensively, he continues to show elite speed, getting downhill, finishing through contact around the basket and just being a playmaker.'
