When it comes to 'Books and Basketball,' Coach Brett Queen and Hoggard High School not only made an A+, but they also help write the book on the balance of academics and athletics. Per coach Queen, 'The Hoggard High School [Wilmington, NC), men's basketball program earned the NCHSAA Scholar-Athlete Team Award for the Eight consecutive season. The varsity team had an impressive 3.365 GPA (Unweighted). On the court, the Vikings went 23-7 and made it to the NCHSAA 4A Elite 8. This was the 15th consecutive season the Vikings have made the playoffs and finished first or second in the Mideastern Conference.

What's even more impressive is the simple fact that during the past eight years, not only did Hoggard win the NCHSAA Scholar-Athlete Team Award, they also averaged 18.8 wins per season. What coach Queen has accomplished in the past eight years of balancing academics and basketball is impressive to say the least. He has established a winning tradition based on core academic principles. The foundation of success on the basketball court is a direct correlation of the outstanding work the team has achieved in the classroom.

Leading the way this past season is 6'2 junior Brady Rankin. He averaged a team high 16.3 PPG, but also maintained a 3.5 GPA. We had a chance to watch Rankin at one of our spring travel ball events and wrote the following. 'Rankin is a certified bucket getter. He had a game high 43 points including nine 3-pointers. He shot it at a very high percentage and was Curry-like. Rankin shot with confidence and range.' At another event, we wrote. 'Impressive showing from him this weekend. Showed ability to hit from beyond the arch as well as the toughness to go inside and attack the lane.' In addition, 5'11 senior Sabastian Haidera averaged 10.8 PPG and maintained a 3.75 GPA.
