Charlotte Latin advances to NCISAA 4A semi-finals
Charlotte Latin 71 Christ School 58
Phenom Hoops travelled to Charlotte, North Carolina to cover the NCISAA 4A quarterfinal game between Christ School and Charlotte Latin. Christ School came into the contest with a 13-13 record while Charlotte Latin sported a 21-7 record. While Christ School had a .500 record, they were regarded as a possible sleeper team that could make a serious run to the NCISAA 4A semi-finals. They have 6’10 Harvard signee Justice Ajogbar and 6’9 sophomore DeAnte Green while Charlotte Latin has 6’0 Holy Cross signee Randy Johnson. That being said, Christ School has developed a reputation as a traditional power in the NCISAA. On the other hand, coach Chris Berger may have one of the better teams in the state very few people know about.
While Charlotte Latin was giving up tremendous size on the interior, coach Berger “doubled down” on every pass made to the low post. They made it difficult for Christ School on the offensive end of the court and their “dribble drive and kick” offense created 3-point scoring opportunities, which was the difference in the game. Charlotte Latin hit 10 3-pointers and every time Christ School made a run, Latin returned the favor with a timely and dagger 3-pointer.
Charlotte Latin “The Sum is greater than the parts”
As I stated in a social media post, “This was the first-time watching Charlotte Latin this season and shame on me.” First of all, coach Chris Berger simply does an outstanding job. His teams are well coached, disciplined, fundamentally sound and play the game the right way. They are unselfish, makes the extra pass, and as a collective unit are a fun team to watch. In the impressive home win over Christ School, it was a balanced attack. 6’2 junior Graham Calton finished with a game high 20 points including a handful of 3-pointers. 6’0 Holy Cross signee Randy Johnson is the consummate point guard. He is poised, mature, and leads by example and chipped in 12 points, but it was his floor game that was quite impressive. 6’1 junior Chase Montgomery chipped in 11 points, while 6’5 senior Grayson Clements and 6’6 senior Bennett Smith finished with 10 and nine points respectively.
Charlotte Latin vs. Durham Academy
The winner of this game will take on the winner of the Cannon and Greensboro Day game. Coming into the season, very few people would have guessed Charlotte Latin and Durham Academy would have opportunity to play for the NCISAA 4A state championship. Both teams are extremely well coached, disciplined and rely heavily on the 3-point shot. It will be a game of very similar styles as both teams will be patience on offense and play excellent team defense. While this game may not grab the headlines of the semi-finals, it could just be one of the more intriguing games of the tournament. It will be a chess match between two excellent coaches and teams.
6’9 sophomore forward DeAnte Green finished with a team high 19 points including 9-10 from the free throw line. Green has the ability to go “inside/out” and his mobility and agility will allow him to be a high major prospect. In addition, 5’10 junior and 6’0 freshman Zack Myers both finished with 12 points to round out double digit scoring.
