Overcoming Adversity and Maintaining the Course
Coach Erasto Hatchett
Last season, Northside finished 17-12 and coach Erasto Hatchett was on the verge of a promising 2019-20 season. Unfortunately, top 25 national prospect transferred and high major prospect Jaden Seymour had a severe injury which forced him to have surgery and miss the first part of the current season. Seymour may return to action sometime in January. Throughout it all, coach Hatchett has maintained the motto #WeWorkOverHere and now has an impressive 10-2 record, losing games to Concord First Assembly and Independence. Concord First Assembly is one of the top teams in the state regardless of affiliation and Independence is one of the better public-school teams. Then, just last week, coach Hatchett lost leading scorer Glynn Hubbard to an injury for an indefinite timeframe.
In their win over Fort Mill High School at the Battle of the Rock, Northside Christian used this opportunity for others to step up and they did just that. Northside Christian had a well-balanced attack and senior point guard Najir Underwood finished with 16 points, dished out two assists and even had four steals. Solomon Tucker won MVP honors by scoring nine points, collected 10 rebounds and even had five blocked shots. After the game, we had a chance to speak with coach Hatchett and we came away totally impressed. Not once did coach Hatchett make reference to the loss of Seymour or more recently Glynn Hubbard, but used these setbacks as a teaching moment. It was time for others to step up!
