On Tuesday night, Phenom Hoops traveled to Siler City to see Chatham Charter (11-0) take on Uwharrie Charter (7-2) in an NCHSAA 1A matchup.

Chatham Charter struck first as Adam Harvey drove and finished with the floater. Sophomore Aamir Mapp also had a productive quarter for Chatham Charter. But Uwharrie Charter’s Cam Fordham and Ashton Troutman had strong first quarters to help take the lead. Fordham did a nice job of driving the ball and either finishing at the basket or finding teammates like Troutman for the drop-off finishes at the rim. Uwharrie Charter held a 13-10 lead at the end of the first.

In the second quarter, Chatham Charter started on a 5-2 run to tie the game up at 15-15 as Trevor Golden knocked down a midrange pull-up, and then on the next possession, Jackson Brown found Clay Griffin for the three-pointer. But as soon as it looked like Chatham Charter would be taking control of the game, Uwharrie Charter answered. Uwharrie Charter’s Dylan Wheatley drilled back to back three-pointers. Uwharrie Charter finished the half on a 10-0 run to take the 25-15 lead going into halftime.

The third quarter started just like the second quarter, with a Trevor Golden basket. Golden would make his presence felt in the second half for Chatham Charter. He was creating off the bounce, getting to the basket, and finishing strong. He scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half. He finished a crafty spin move and scooped up a finish. Then followed the highlight play by taking a charge on the defensive end. And then drilled a long catch and shoot two-pointer on the very next possession to cut the deficit to 37-28.

Uwharrie Charter was able to maintain their lead at 40-30 heading into the fourth. Point guard Zane Caudle did a really good job of playing tough and scrappy. Dylan Wheatley also scored 5 of his 17 points in the third quarter as he knocked down a three-pointer and got to the line where he was automatic on the night.

In the fourth quarter, Uwharrie Charter began to take control of the game and extend their lead as sophomore Ashton Troutman finished with an emphatic dunk off the pick and roll. Troutman played a complete game, making his presence felt in the paint. A few possessions later, Cam Fordham grabbed back-to-back offensive rebounds and finished the put-back, drawing the foul, and connecting on the free throw. Later, Uwharrie Charter’s Dalon Arrington blocked a Chatham Charter layup in transition, then later in the possession, he grabbed the rebound, pushed the ball up the court in transition and found Dylan Wheatley for the layup. Uwharrie Charter was able to build upon this run and finished with the win and a final score of 65-44.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the game’s standouts:

Cam Fordham 6’3 2021 (Uwharrie Charter)

Cam Fordham, the dual-sport athlete, finished with a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds. He played a tough game and set the tone on both ends of the court for Uwharrie Charter. He rebounded on both ends of the floor. He drove the ball strong to the basket. And not to mention, he did a really good job of finding the open man. He made a couple nice drop off passes at the end of his drives.

Dylan Wheatley 6’1 2022 (Uwharrie Charter)

Dylan Wheatley finished the game with 17 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists. What initially stuck out was his ability to shoot the ball from the perimeter. He drilled three three-pointers on the night. This opened up driving opportunities for him as defenders had to rush out at him. Wheatley did a nice job of driving the closeouts and attacking the basket strong, where he was able to draw fouls and get to the foul line, going a perfect 6-6 on the night.

Ashton Troutman 6’6 2023 (Uwharrie Charter)

Ashton Troutman was able to provide his team an interior presence that made him a difficult cover for the opposing team. He finished well around the basket. Troutman does a good job in pick and roll situations. He sprints out to set screens, rolls hard, has good hands, and will finish strong on the roll. He had a strong dunk in the fourth quarter at the end of a pick and roll. On the defensive end, he does a good job utilizing his length to altar shots and to defend on the perimeter.

Trevor Golden 6’2 2021 (Chatham Charter)

Senior Trevor Golden led Chatham Charter is scoring and rebounding with 15 points and 6 rebounds. He showed the ability to create for himself and others off the bounce. He was able to attack the basket and use his strong frame to finish through contact. He knocked down the midrange pull-up jumper and also the three-point shot. He had an all-around game and did things on both sides of the ball for his team. What stood out to me was in the middle of back-to-back baskets for him in the third quarter, he sacrificed his body and took a charge on the defensive end. It was only my first time watching this team, but Golden stood out as the leader for this group.
