At the beginning of each new year, Phenom Hoops works to assemble a series of articles centered around unsigned prospects in the senior class. Last season, over one hundred players from North Carolina went on to play at the Division I, II, III, or NAIA levels (with several others exploring the JUCO path). That number looks likely to continue increasing with the current senior class. Typically, we try to highlight guys who are under-recruited by college coaches or overlooked by the masses. This edition will feature Johnniyus Sharpe of Reidsville High School.
We’ve watched Sharpe throughout his high school journey, recently stating, “Several guys on this roster are having big seasons, and Johnniyus Sharpe has been incredibly valuable to their team’s success. Some could say he’s having a breakout season but there’s never really been any doubt surrounding Sharpe or his ability. Between his skill, athleticism, and impactful identity on both ends of the floor, he has a lot to like. Sharpe is comfortable initiating the offense or creating for others, but is arguably at his best when looking to apply pressure as a scorer from all levels. He also stands out as a tough, physical defender and reliable threat in transition. Right now, he’s averaging 22.0 PPG, 4.0 RPG, 3.0 APG, and 2.0 SPG with 46/36/73 splits. Sharpe is definitely a scholarship-level player who should appeal to a ton of college coaches.”
Although that was written one month ago, everything stated still rings true. Sharpe is an incredibly vital piece for an undefeated Rams squad that could easily win back-to-back state championships. His recruitment has picked up in the recent months (adding offers from Winston-Salem State and USC Aiken), but it’s surprising that he’s not a bigger priority for scholarship programs. He’s won over 50 consecutive high school games while putting up impressive numbers across the board and highlighting a lot of translatable qualities. Sharpe is tough, rugged, and stands out as a pure gamer on both ends of the floor. He can fill it up as a scorer, suffocate opponents defensively, and consistently compete at a high level. Sharpe will be a terrific get for a college program.
