At the beginning of each new year, Phenom Hoops works to assemble a series of articles centered around unsigned senior prospects. Last season, hundreds of players from North Carolina went on to play at the Division I, II, III or NAIA levels, and that number looks likely to continue increasing with the current senior class. Typically, we take a closer look at guys who are overlooked and underrated, and today’s edition will highlight Kayleb Coles of Wayne Country Day and Lionchaser U.

We’ve seen Coles since his arrival onto the high school scene, recently stating, “It’s perplexing to see a player like Coles, who truly possesses all the tools to be a clear difference-maker at the next level, still available for college programs. This head-scratching sentiment was only furthered through his dominant play throughout the weekend. Coles did legitimately everything, and it was impressive. Offensively, he consistently hit jumpers (with deep range), attacked the basket, played above the rim, and created for himself and others. Coles displayed great vision while constantly mixing it up as a scorer from all levels. He also regularly capitalized on second-chance opportunities. Additionally, Coles blocked numerous shots and secured rebounds at a high volume. It was easy to see the appeal, and coaches should take notice.”

Here lies yet another issue with the portal, as a scholarship-level prospect like Coles is still waiting for schools to get involved with his recruitment. Between his size, skill, and athleticism alone, Coles should have more suitors. He’s a quality finisher with length, mobility, and the ability to play around the basket or along the perimeter. Coles is a willing passer and makes solid decisions with the ball in his hands. He’s a great rebounder and useful shot-blocking presence who is capable of overwhelming his assignment on both ends of the floor. Coles is also a reliable shooter, especially in spot-up situations, and forces opponents to respect his ability to score from all levels. He does so many things well on the court and would be a definite asset for a variety of programs. It’ll be interesting to see where Coles ends up, as he could provide an immediate impact.
