At the beginning of each new year, Phenom Hoops works to assemble a series of articles centered around unsigned senior prospects. Last season, over one hundred players from North Carolina went on to play at the Division I, II, III or NAIA levels, and that number looks likely to continue increasing with the current senior class. Typically, we take a closer look at guys who are overlooked and underrated, and today’s edition will highlight Trey “Mater” Cousin of Franklin Prep and MidState Magic.

We’ve watched Cousin perfect his craft over the last few years, which is what makes this excerpt from multiple summers ago so intriguing: One of the guys that raised his stock the most over the weekend was 6’4 Trey Cousin through his non-stop scoring display. He made sure the defense was being held accountable every second he was on the floor. Cousin never stopped moving or touching the ball; he was a constant threat to score, and when the timing was right, he would attack. A strong, athletic build is part of the reason that he is such a special scorer, but the other part in that is the polish on his skill game. As a team leader, Cousin played a focal point on both sides of the floor, carrying a heavy burden on either end. That didn’t stop him from being a problem for opposing defenses, as he scored relentlessly in the half-court and in transition on all three levels. He’s a quick thinker too, and can get crafty if need be. Cousin put on an impressive showing, and the fact that he can play either guard position or on the wing should make him a coveted asset.”

Although plenty of time has passed, Cousin has maintained all of what made him a standout prospect back then. He still scores the ball at an electric rate, averaging 25 PPG this season with Franklin Prep after his impressive 27 PPG over the course of last summer. Cousin utilizes his combination of size, strength, craftiness, and separation skills to pile on points from all three levels. His frame allows him to attack in various different ways and cause mismatches on the offensive end of the floor. Cousin continues to be a name for college coaches to recognize and should have the opportunity to showcased his abilities during the upcoming summer season.
