At the beginning of each new year, Phenom Hoops works to assemble a series of articles centered around unsigned senior prospects. Last season, over a hundred players from North Carolina went on to play at the Division I, II, III, or NAIA levels, and that number looks likely to continue increasing with the current senior class. Typically, we take a closer look at guys who are overlooked and under-recruited, and today's edition will highlight Zion McDuffie of Butler High School.

We've seen McDuffie burst onto the scene over the last few years, recently stating, 'Similar to the previous entry, it's easy to see a path where Zion McDuffie's production really explodes during the upcoming season. He's already led the team in three major statistical categories (points, steals, and blocks) while finishing second in rebounds. McDuffie should have no issue asserting himself as the clear, undisputed leader for the Bulldogs, especially given the overall age of this roster. He excels in the open floor, and can be found applying nonstop downhill pressure as a finisher. McDuffie is an explosive athlete who looks to dunk virtually anything within five feet, but can also finish below the rim or knock down jumpers at a solid rate. He works well without the ball, but can create his own shot as needed. McDuffie offers a physical presence defensively and rebounds effectively for his size/position. He should have a very productive upcoming season and, subsequently, warrant more attention from various types of college coaches going forward.'

Currently, McDuffie is enjoying the best season of his career'both from an individual production standpoint and in terms of team success. He's posting nightly averages of 17.1 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 2.7 SPG, and 2.7 BPG while shooting 50% from the floor. McDuffie is a strong, explosive wing/forward prospect who excels in the open court. He utilizes his length and anticipation well to harass opposing ball-handlers, intercept passing lanes, and apply constant pressure in transition. That being said, McDuffie can also attack from the wing or make an impact as an off-ball cutter. His powerful explosion allows him to block a ton of shots while rebounding bigger than his listed height would imply. McDuffie offers a tough, rugged presence and still possesses plenty of upside. Expect him to be a useful piece wherever he ultimately ends up at the next level.
