At the beginning of each new year, Phenom Hoops works to assemble a series of articles centered around unsigned senior prospects. Last season, hundreds of players from North Carolina went on to play at the Division I, II, III or NAIA levels, and that number looks likely to continue increasing with the current senior class. Typically, we take a closer look at guys who are overlooked and underrated, and today’s edition will highlight Brendan Bailey of Asheville Christian and NLPB Team Select.
We’ve seen Bailey an abundance of times over the last few years, stating, “Next, we look at a player who simply knows how to produce alongside any collection of teammates, Brendan Bailey. He’s a smart, adaptable, high-motor wing/forward prospect with an unselfish approach on both ends of the floor. Bailey is a natural glue-guy who can lead or produce in a role, and affect all facets of the game. He’s a reliable three-level scorer who can finish, attack off the bounce, or hit jumpers from the perimeter. Bailey utilizes his body very well to absorb contact as a defender and rebounder. Bailey is willing to make hustle plays and adapt to whatever his team needs from him. Next in his development process is working to get quicker, as it would make him a better defender when switched onto smaller guards. Coach Holcomb-Faye on Bailey: “Brendan showed the ability to score from all three levels. His motor was constantly running and he created extra possessions for his team all day.” Bailey did a lot of things well during his time at camp and should be a target for various college coaches over these next few months.”
After his high school season was cut short, Bailey hasn’t really seen much traction within his recruitment. He’s undoubtedly a college-level player who several programs should be prioritizing—especially at this stage in the process. The effect of the portal is becoming increasingly weird, as schools who would’ve previously done anything to get a guy like Bailey are now exploring loftier avenues. At 6-foot-4, he’s a strong, skilled, versatile player who would be an immediate contributor for numerous schools at the next level. Bailey is comfortable defending multiple positions or producing in various different roles offensively. He provides the necessary blend of IQ, toughness, and well-rounded ability to make a constant impact on the court. Add in his adaptable, team-first approach, and it’s truly perplexing to make sense of his recruitment. Bailey will be an impactful piece at the next level.
