At the beginning of each new year, Phenom Hoops works to assemble a series of articles centered around unsigned senior prospects. Last season, hundreds of players from North Carolina went on to play at the Division I, II, III or NAIA levels, and that number looks likely to continue increasing with the current senior class. Typically, we take a closer look at guys who are overlooked and underrated, and today's edition will highlight Sam Cogan of Northside Christian.

We've seen Cogan throughout his playing career, and our Patrick O'Brien featured him most recently, stating, 'Cogan had a very strong showing for his team and the unsigned senior continued to show that he can produce.  With his 6'3 frame, his strength as a guard, his perimeter feel, his IQ, and his ability to be a focal point but also play within the offense, Cogan showed that he can help a program at the next level.' Followed later by, 'The unsigned senior is giving everyone a reminder that he can be a nice piece for a program late.  We have known and seen his ability to score the ball effectively, whether it is creating and getting into the paint or spotting up and with his jumper.  But you add that to his IQ, his winning-play mentality, and leadership on the floor, Cogan continues to produce and display his well-rounded offensive capabilities.'

It should be pretty easy to see the next-level appeal with someone who has been relevant and productive for as long as Cogan. He's a strong, athletic lefty who loves to attack the basket but has made clear strides as a shooter and overall creator. Cogan can handle the ball and initiate the offense as needed, but also knows how to play alongside a primary ball-handler. He's a useful scorer from all levels, but typically looks to get downhill and make plays. Cogan finishes well through contact, makes the extra pass whenever available, and thrives in transition. He's a capable defender and rebounder who regularly intercepts passing lanes to force turnovers. Cogan can rise above the rim and finish on top of unsuspecting opponents. Though the landscape has been unpredictable, he should definitely have a place at the next level.
