At the beginning of each new year, Phenom Hoops works to assemble a series of articles centered around unsigned senior prospects. Last season, hundreds of players from North Carolina went on to play at the Division I, II, III or NAIA levels, and that number looks likely to continue increasing with the current senior class. Typically, we take a closer look at guys who are overlooked and underrated, and today's edition will highlight Joel Baucom of Combine Academy.

We've seen Baucom various times over the years, including in the summer season, where we stated, 'Although folks definitely started to notice Baucom throughout his most recent season at Combine Academy, few realize the background of his family. He's the youngest of six siblings, and will follow in his mother's footsteps by securing opportunities to play basketball at the collegiate level. Baucomreclassified and still remained one of the younger kids in his grade, which also allowed his body to properly develop. In terms of his actual game, Baucom has utilized the last year to really showcase his abilities as a creator and overall leader. He's done a particularly impressive job of addressing his weaknesses and proving himself as a reliable defender and athlete. Baucom has obvious value, specifically in his ability to be a focal offensive point or apply constant pressure without the ball in his hands. His knowledge of the game is clearly evident in the way he operates, able to consistently make positive plays and intelligent decisions alongside any collection of teammates. Add in his high-level academics, and Baucom should have a variety of programs competing for his services over the next calendar year.'

Since then, he's only maintained his status as a lethal perimeter shooter and excellent spot-up threat for the Goats. Baucom's emergence provided this group with someone to fill the void of freshly departed Kris Robinson. He maximizes his off-ball presence and consistently capitalizes on his chances within the flow of the action. Baucom possesses smooth, repeatable mechanics and the quick release to knock down jumpers in the face of aggressive closeouts. Additionally, he will attack off the bounce and set up others as needed. Baucom doesn't look to do too much outside of his role, and works to make an impact as a defender and rebounder. Given his size, shooting, and playing background, he will be a useful piece at the next level.
