At the beginning of each new year, Phenom Hoops works to assemble a series of articles centered around unsigned senior prospects. Last season, over one hundred players from the Carolinas went on to play at the Division I, II, III or NAIA levels, and that number looks likely to continue increasing with the current senior class. Typically, we take a closer look at guys who are overlooked and underrated, and today's edition will highlight'Tyler Schaafsma of Bishop England.

We've seen Schaafsma at countless camps, including our most recent Top 80, where we stated, 'Continuing onto a player that simply knows how to find ways to contribute, regardless of setting or surrounding teammates, Tyler Schaafsma. He's a wiry, fairly athletic guard prospect with the ability to adapt and thrive within a glue-guy role on either end of the floor. Schaafsma is able to score the ball efficiently from all three levels but also looks to make the extra pass and operate within the flow of the team. He's quick and utilizes his solid ball-handling skills to breakdown his assignment and make quality decisions when attacking. Schaafsma displays a high motor, unselfish mentality, and nice feel for the game on both ends of the floor. Next in his development process is working on the use of his off-hand, as it would make him a better below-the-rim finisher. Coach Rice on Schaafsma: 'Tyler plays the game the right way. He knocks down open shots and plays hard on-ball defense. He plays above the rim in transition whenever possible.' Schaafsma did a lot of things well during his time at camp and will be a prospect for college coaches to monitor throughout his upcoming senior season at Bishop England.'

Since then, Schaafsma made his seamless transition from a role player to the clear all-around leader for the Battling Bishops. He's an excellent athlete with the ability to meet opponents at the rim and finish through contact. That being said, Schaafsma also possesses the necessary skill, toughness, and craftiness to assert himself as a scorer from all levels. He's a useful passer and strong rebounder, particularly for his size, with the ability to impact the glass quite effectively for his size/position. This past season, Schaafsma posted nightly averages of 17.8 PPG, 6.3 RPG, and 1.5 SPG while scoring the ball at a fairly efficient rate. Though his calm, steady demeanor might not allow him to stand out at first glance, Schaafsma certainly has the tools to succeed at the next level.'
