At the beginning of each new year, Phenom Hoops works to assemble a series of articles centered around unsigned senior prospects. Last season, hundreds of players from North Carolina went on to play at the Division I, II, III or NAIA levels, and that number looks likely to continue increasing with the current senior class. Typically, we take a closer look at guys who are overlooked and underrated, and today’s edition will highlight Peter Moye of South Meck High School.

We’ve covered Moye extensively over the years, including during his highly productive (and undefeated) summer season with BSA Supreme, stating, “There are plenty of unsung heroes within this roster, including Peter Moye and his natural approach as a glue-guy. It’s difficult to properly quantify the value that someone like Moye brings to a team, simply because he’s always going to produce within his role and make the right play without ever feeling a need to force the action. Players like him bring a lot of overlooked (to the general masses) value to a well-oiled machine such as BSA Supreme. Given everything he already does for South Mecklenburg, Moye’s seamless fit should come as no surprise. Over the season, Moye averaged 9.8 PPG and 3.7 RPG with 56/35/64 shooting splits and a 1.7 AST/TO ratio.” Our own Patrick O’Brien later followed up with, “Moye continues to showcase his ability to be a high-IQ creator, who brings a tough presence to the floor. He does a great job in mixing it up offensively and scoring in a variety of manners, whether it is knocking down shots off the catch, creating strong and being physical off the dribble, finishing strong through contact at times, and being a true leader. He steps up in big ways and simply knows how to be effective on the court, finding ways to consistently score and lead his team. Moye does so consistently each time we watch him on the court, having big performance after big performance. With his consistency and efficiency, Moye continues to prove that he should be a target for several programs around the area.”

Upon closer examination, Moye’s lack of recruitment becomes even more shocking. He was the clear, undisputed leader and focal point for a South Meck (21-6) squad that largely outperformed expectations. Moye posted insane averages of 21.3 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 3.0 APG, and 1.3 SPG while posting unbelievably efficient 56/49/78 splits on an impressive volume from all levels. He led the team in three of the five major statistical categories and showcased the ability to do legitimately everything on a game-to-game basis. Furthermore, Moye is the type of selfless, low-maintenance, well-rounded player who adapts to various types of roles and is willing to do whatever necessary for the betterment of the team. Each one of his teammates and coaches only have high praise regarding the versatile guard. Whether operating as the primary option or a complementary piece, he simply finds ways to be an effective contributor. Add in his IQ, motor, and malleability, and it’s easy to see how he’ll be an asset at the next level.
