At the beginning of each new year, Phenom Hoops works to assemble a series of articles centered around unsigned senior prospects. Last season, hundreds of players from North Carolina went on to play at the Division I, II, III or NAIA levels, and that number looks likely to continue increasing with the current senior class. Typically, we take a closer look at guys who are overlooked and underrated, and today’s edition will highlight Jackson Hawkins of North Iredell.
We’ve written about Hawkins various times, including during his time with the Carolina Riptide, stating, “There is certainly a lot to like about Jackson Hawkins, especially given his combination of size, shooting, and athleticism from the wing position. Like the previous two, he’s simply tougher than a vast majority of high school prospects. He consistently shows a willingness to utilize his body to defend, rebound, make hustle plays, and absorb contact when attacking the basket. Hawkins is a nice leaper and fairly nimble for someone so sturdy, which allows him to outmuscle opponents with relative ease. He’s capable of being a primary option or operating without the ball, and can expand his production as needed.” Which was later followed by, “The North Iredell squad was without their primary big man, but Hawkins had no issue asserting himself as their focal point. He’s a strong, tough, physical wing prospect with nice size, athleticism, and the ability to score the ball from all levels. Hawkins finished well through contact, defended his position with purpose, and consistently found ways to score the ball. He clearly stood out as their undisputed leader.”
During the high school season, Hawkins showed adaptability and a willingness to do whatever necessary to provide his team with an edge. He led North Iredell in points (15.4 PPG) and assists (3.7 APG) while still ranking second in rebounds (4.9 RPG), steals, (2.1 SPG), and blocks (0.6 BPG). Overall, he’s shown the understanding of how to be an effective piece within a successful operation. Between the Raiders and his time with Carolina Riptide, Hawkins has highlighted a lot of ability while winning plenty of games. He’s a big, strong, bouncy guard with ability as a shot-maker and solid creator. Hawkins also provides a capable defensive and rebounding presence. He should have various opportunities at the next level.
