At the beginning of each new year, Phenom Hoops works to assemble a series of articles centered around unsigned senior prospects. Last season, dozens of players from West Virginia went on to play at the Division I, II, III or NAIA levels, and that number looks likely to continue increasing with the current senior class. Typically, we take a closer look at guys who are overlooked and underrated, and today’s edition will highlight Christian Holland of Beckley IJN.

It’s somewhat difficult to understand how capable, productive, college-ready prospects continually fall through the cracks. Holland is another example of a player that simply has done everything right but still hasn’t seen the appropriate amount of interest and offers come his way. He’s a smart, high-motor guard that can operate from either backcourt position, given his blend of vision and scoring polish. Holland possesses nice athleticism and understands how to thrive in transition, both with and without the ball in his hands. He’s also a very heady, instinctive defender with great anticipation for jumping into passing lanes. Holland shows a willingness to rebound, make the unselfish play, and outwork opponents on both sides of the ball.

We’ve seen Holland various times, both at camps and with Beckley IJN, including at our most recent Tennessee Phenom 150, where we stated: “Moving onto a player that showcased a lot of skill and translatable tools throughout camp, Christian Holland. He’s a long, wiry guard prospect with a strong two-way feel for the game and the ability to absolutely pile up points on offense. Holland scores efficiently from all three levels and has the necessary athleticism to rise above the rim on penetration attempts. He’s unselfish and creates well for others, but also knows how to take advantage of easy opportunities. Next in his development process is working on his ability to move without the ball, as it would allow him to seize more scoring opportunities as an off-ball cutter. Coach Cassell on Holland: “Christian is a very solid player that can score the ball on all three levels. He’s very athletic and gets to the rim with ease, able to finish at the rim and through contact. He can continue to work harder on defense and it will elevate his game to the next level. Christian can also work on being quicker with his pull-up.” Holland was quite impressive on both sides of the ball and could be a prospect for college coaches to keep a close eye on going forward.”

Though Holland’s recruitment has been somewhat quiet, his production has been consistent throughout every setting. He should certainly have more suitors at this current time, given his malleable skillset and overall presence on the court. Though he’s considering JUCO and will likely look to transfer, Holland already has the necessary ability to make an impact at various different types of schools.
