The state of North Carolina is blessed with an over abundance of talent. In the North Carolina 2018 class, 60 plus players signed with D1 schools and another 40 plus signed to play at the D2, D3, NAIA or Juco level. Quite impressive numbers! This year, the 2019 class is on the same course to have 100 plus players continue to play at the collegiate level. In our unsigned senior spotlight, we want to take a closer look at 6’11 Derrick Quansah of Village Christian, who we strongly feel is a scholarship-level player at the D1 level. Towering at 6-foot-11, it’s perplexing to try and figure out why Village Christian’s big man doesn’t have more recruitment at the moment. He’s a high-level rim-protector with ridiculous length and incredible instincts around the basket. Quansah runs the floor well and never forces the action offensively; he’s always looking to keep the ball moving. He’s able to score around the basket, but typically operates within his arms length for dunks and soft bunnies. Quansah rebounds the ball at a terrific rate and understands how to properly utilize his length on both ends of the floor.
This season, Quansah has hovered around averaging a double-double from points and rebounds on a nightly basis. He doesn’t need touches to impact the game, which should be a huge selling point for college coaches at the next level. So many guys are wrapped up in the glitz and glamour of what basketball has become that we forget the significance of players like Quansah and what they can offer a program.
Last November, our Jamie Shaw had this to say, “A year ago, when Quansah first got here, he was tall and not very coordinated. In only a year’s time, he has worked himself into becoming a Division 1 prospect. He spent the summer working out with David West, which was sure to help. If he continues on this steep incline between now and this time next year, watch out. He is a 10+ rebound and 5+ block guy right now. He finishes around the rim and runs the floor well. Without question, you cannot teach his blend of size, length and athleticism.” Since then, very little has changed for Quansah, but he continues to sharpen his feel for the game and should certainly be able to make quality contributions at the next level.
