At the beginning of each new year, Phenom Hoops works to assemble a series of articles centered around unsigned senior prospects. Last season, over one hundred players from North Carolina went on to play at the Division I, II, III or NAIA levels, and that number looks likely to continue increasing with the current senior class. Typically, we take a closer look at guys who are overlooked and underrated, and today’s edition will highlight William Toman of Franklinton High School and Royal Knights.

There are various factors that go into an individual player’s recruitment, from size to skill to team success and countless others, which ultimately determine the likelihood of advancing to the next level. Toman has certainly made his case over the last calendar year, where he’s continually worked to progress his game and make others better. He’s a wiry off-guard prospect with a nice blend of playmaking and perimeter shooting. Toman defends well and understands how to properly position himself to force turnovers, secure rebounds, and push the break in transition. He does a great job of operating as the primary glue-guy with any collection of teammates and showing a willingness to make hustle plays at a strong rate.

We’ve seen Toman perform at multiple camps, including our North Carolina 150, where we stated: “Next, we look at a player that did a terrific job of filling in the gaps on both ends of the floor, William Toman. He’s a smart, high-motor guard that knows how to make plays within the flow of the team. Toman can knock down open perimeter jumpers, attack closeouts, and shows a willingness to make hustle plays on defense. Next in his development process is working on the use of his off-hand, as it would make him a more reliable finisher around the basket. Coach Gary on Toman: “William did a great job of not forcing anything but impacting the game in every aspect. He played with different players regularly, but played his game every time. He pitches the ball ahead, brings the ball up, grabs rebounds, drives to the basket, pulls-up for the jumper, and knocking down the occasional three-pointer. William has a great attitude and was like a coach on the floor.” Toman enjoyed a nice showing at camp and should have a productive senior campaign at Franklinton.”

Toman built off of his strong performance at camp and was more than prepared for the high school season, where he heated up, averaged 14 PPG during conference play, and was named to his second All-Conference team. Toman excels in the classroom as well, sporting a GPA of 3.7 and a SAT score of 1100, and intends to further his horizons in mathematics field at college. He has shown some quality flashes over the last calendar year and could be a useful contributor with the right program.
