At the beginning of each new year, Phenom Hoops works to assemble a series of articles centered around unsigned senior prospects. Last season, hundreds of players from North Carolina went on to play at the Division I, II, III or NAIA levels, and that number looks likely to continue increasing with the current senior class. Typically, we take a closer look at guys who are overlooked and underrated, and today’s edition will highlight Jackson Hartzell of Northwest Guilford.
We’ve seen Hartzell continually grow over the years, recently stating, “At this point, the general masses should know about Jackson Hartzell and everything he brings to the table—especially with this group. He’s a known shooter with the quick release and understanding of how to move without the ball to consistently overwhelm opposing defenses. Hartzell truly only requires a glimmer of daylight to get off clean looks, which was evidenced on countless occasions throughout the weekend. As dangerous as his shooting is, the scrappy guard could also be found running the team and initiating the offense as needed. Hartzell understands the game and positions himself for success as a defender, rebounder, and overall threat in transition. He also attacked closeouts and finished or scored with crafty in-between moves. Hartzell does a great job of playing to his strengths in every possible setting, and it should only lead to more traction from college coaches. With shooting at such a high premium, expect Hartzell to warrant various opportunities at the next level.”
Very little has changed since then, as Hartzell has easily maintained his status as a lethal shooting threat from the perimeter. He’s a capable ball-handler and passer, but typically finds opportunities without the ball in his hands as a cutter and useful spot-up threat. Hartzell displays range, nice elevation, and a quick release on jumpers. He possesses solid defensive instincts and regularly intercepts passing lanes to force turnovers and push transition play. Hartzell plays bigger than his size and looks to involve himself in the action however possible. He operates well within the confines of the team concept, but can also heat up quickly and knock down numerous shots in succession. Given his recent uptick in recruitment and overall value for the Vikings, he should have various choices to further his playing career.
