At the beginning of each new year, Phenom Hoops works to assemble a series of articles centered around unsigned senior prospects. Last season, hundreds of players from North Carolina went on to play at the Division I, II, III or NAIA levels, and that number looks likely to continue increasing with the current senior class. Typically, we take a closer look at guys who are overlooked and underrated, and today's edition will highlight Jaylan Bowen of Millbrook and Team Push.
We've seen Bowen progress throughout the years, previously stating, 'Continuing onto a player that showcased a strong two-way skillset and approach throughout camp, Jaylan Bowen. He's a smart, tough, crafty guard prospect with the ability to run a team or operate without the ball in his hands. Bowen is very quick, which allows him to penetrate and make plays for himself and others, but can also assert himself as a scorer from midrange or beyond the arc. Next in his development process is working on the use of his off-hand, as it would make him a better ball-handler. Coach Monden on Bowen: 'Jaylan was one of the bright spots on the team. He played great team defense and was a vocal leader early on. He demonstrated deep range from three-point territory in catch and shoot situations and was comfortable playing both the lead guard and off-guard positions. Jaylan should look for opportunities to get more paint touches and create for others.' Bowen proved to be an asset throughout camp and should be poised for a very productive season at Millbrook.'
Since then, Bowen has only continued to further solidify himself as a college-level player. He's slightly undersized but quick, tough, and shoots the ball at a high percentage from the perimeter. Bowen displays great change-of-pace and can reliably run the team as a balanced floor general with vision, scoring ability, and defensive prowess. His production hasn't wavered through the spring months, as he's already emerged as a major piece for Team Push's group of unsigned seniors. Add in his feel, craftiness, and understanding of how to outwork his assignment, and it's easy to appreciate Bowen. Expect him to find a home at the next level sooner than later.
