There are so many different ways to be an impactful basketball player. Unfortunately, most kids tend to gravitate toward scoring and overemphasize the individual facets of the game. It’s simply uncommon to see a young player who would rather pass, defend, or rebound instead of score. However, they do exist. There are a handful of examples throughout North Carolina, and Jake Baker arguably embodies this sentiment as much as anyone.
Most people likely look at the Cannon roster and recognize the notable senior campaign of Evan Ingram or the breakout seasons from Sean Nix and Kenan Dixon. While each of those three has been incredibly vital to the Cougars’ success, they aren’t in their current position without the production and unselfish leadership from Baker. He’s a tough, scrappy, high-motor guard who prioritizes getting others involved and making the right play. Baker displays poise and patience when dictating the offense. He breaks down opponents, touches the paint, and consistently locates the open man. Baker scores as needed but doesn’t look for his shot outside of the team structure. He plays with a high motor defensively and does the dirty work whenever possible. Baker is also a solid rebounder for his size/position.
Being the son of a coach can lead to all types of outcomes. Fortunately, Baker is an unselfish, hard-working guy who understands how to put others first for the betterment of the team. Right now, he’s averaging 5.7 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 8.8 APG, and 2.0 SPG. Baker is also second on MaxPreps in assists per game. The Cougars (10-8) have been very impressive since a 0-6 start and should have a lot of optimism going into the final stretch of their schedule. Don’t be surprised if this group makes noise and turns heads during the upcoming playoffs.
