There are numerous factors that go into a recruit's decision-making process to find an ideal match at the college level, from fit to culture to playing time'it all heavily varies from one prospect to the next. That process was much easier for Calvary/Team Felton product, Jackson Gammons, considering he has been conscious of everything since schools first began contacting him. He's grown tremendously over the various seasons, but has upheld much of the same foundation as an off-guard that can complement any supporting cast. Over two years ago, we saw Gammons at our David Rose MDC and wrote:

'Of everyone on such a star-studded team, 6'1 Jackson Gammons (2019) catches the eye from the opening tip. He was clearly one of the smartest two or three players on the floor regardless of competition. Gammons can score on all three levels, but his three-point shot is certainly the most reliable option, as he took (and made) a healthy amount throughout the tournament. With that being said, he's not just a shooter. Gammons displayed a firm understanding of team play, assisting on countless baskets both inside and outside of the paint. If there were a mismatch, he would look to move the ball to that matchup immediately. The last thing that stood out from Gammons was his tough, gritty defense. He could guard three positions with ease, was the first player on the floor for any loose ball, and also showed strong defensive presence both on and off of the ball. We can't wait to see Gammons harness his versatility in the coming tournaments.'

Unsurprisingly, Gammons continued to make strides on both ends of the floor and now regularly dominates the competition. Since that was written, he added strength, grew taller, and developed nicely as an overall shot-creator. We've seen him rapidly elevate from a complementary piece to a primary offensive option while maintaining his strong efficiency from all three levels. Gammons is quite capable of toggling between guard spots and should be able to quickly earn playing time through his phenomenal two-way presence. We sat down to talk with Gammons about his commitment to The Citadel:

JB: You were a relatively underrated prospect in the scheme of things, so what was your overall approach to recruitment' What were you looking for in a program'

JG: In reference to being underrated, I believe everything happens for a reason and there is always a greater idea behind what we as humans can see. Being underrated actually somewhat played in my favor because it kept me humble. At times, I got frustrated with the recruiting process but looking back now, being underrated really doesn't matter because even if you have a bunch of offers, you can only choose one school. I really just tried to approach the recruiting process with a positive mindset because being recruited at all is a blessing. For a program, I was looking for a school that fit my play style, really wanted me, and also fit my academic r'sum'. To me, it wasn't about the biggest school, it was about a place that really wanted me and a place that really fit me, because I want to go into college and flourish as quickly as I can.

JB: What ultimately led to your choice of The Citadel over other programs'

JG: The Citadel was my first offer, and I was the only offer they had out for around 10 months. This showed me immediately that the loyalty was there, and that they wanted me. I also felt a quick connection with the coaching staff, and through the recruiting process I developed the best relationships with them. Their play style fits my game, they are constantly in attack mode and they love to let it fly from deep. I personally love playing that way and I know I can flourish in that style. Also, the program is up-and-coming; they have improved every year since Coach Baucom and his staff took over. I want to be a part of this improvement, and I have personally set a goal to be on the first ever Citadel team to make it to the NCAA tournament. On the academic side of things, The Citadel is a top-notch school that I know I can go and get a very strong degree. The ball has to stop bouncing at some point and having a degree with value was very important to me. Lastly, Charleston is an awesome city, and an awesome place to be my home for the next 4 years.

JB: With your older brother, Preston, being involved in the military, was The Citadel a destination that you had already desired'

JG: My family has a strong military background and we definitely have value in the military lifestyle, but ultimately the decision was up to me. With my brother being in the military, it definitely helped me know that I can handle the disciplinary side of things, but my family encouraged me to go wherever I thought fit me best. After my official visit, I knew that The Citadel's military involvement would help me become the best person I can be off the court, and I see it as a different way to grow as a person.

JB: How do you see yourself fitting in with the program going forward'

JG: The coaches have made it clear to me that they plan to put me in their rotation early. This was another strong point in my commitment to them. They don't want me to come in and wait around to impact the program. After hanging out with the team on my visit, I see myself quickly meshing with the guys quickly on and off the court. Going into the future, I plan on winning a lot of games and ultimately championships at The Citadel.

Currently, Gammons is The Citadel's lone commit in The Class of 2019, but that's guaranteed to change in the coming months. They will be thrilled to lock down a prospect like Gammons, who is capable of many different roles within the team concept, especially this early into the season. It was said multiple times throughout this past summer, but there were times when the off-guard was the most productive player on Team Felton. He isn't flashy, just fundamental, and does things the right way. The Citadel should enjoy these next four years with Gammons, as he'll look to outwork everyone in his path en route to the program's first tournament birth.
