There is something to like in a prospect that stands a 6’8 and can be a big-time threat from the perimeter. Trey Murphy III is just that, along with much more.
If you remember, Murphy made a name for himself in the state of North Carolina just a few years back, being a big-time scorer with length/size at Cary Academy.
Eventually committing to Rice, Murphy got to work right away in his freshman season, averaging 8.4 points and showing off his ability to be a knockdown shooter (42 percent from behind the arc). He backed that up with an impressive sophomore campaign, playing in 29 games and leading the team in scoring (13.7), field goals made (131), dunks (21), and blocks (16). He was also second in 3-pointers made with 75 and third in rebounds per game (5.5).
Now, Murphy has put his name into the transfer portal and programs around the country have been getting in touch. When speaking with him, he informed Phenom Hoops that he had been hearing from Arizona, Texas, Xavier, Houston, Stanford, UCSB, UC Riverside, Arkansas, Iowa State, Appalachian State, DePaul, Cincinnati, Arizona State, Creighton, UConn, BYU, Oklahoma, Minnesota, and Villanova.
“I’m just trying to find a place where I can maximize my potential.”
