Name: Manny Bates
School: NC State
Class: Redshirt Junior

2020-21: It was a rough year for the big man who was injured on the first play from scrimmage against Bucknell, which made him miss the entire year at NC State. Before this season though, Bates was coming off a sophomore season in which he started 23 of 26 games and averaged 9.8 points, 5.9 rebounds, and recorded 64 blocks. Before that in 2019-20, Bates averaged 5.1 points, 4.0 rebounds, and recorded 83 blocks through 29 games played.

Unfortunately for Bates, he couldn’t capitalize on what was a terrific sophomore season at NC State, as he recorded just one minute before missing the entire rest of the season. But now, he is in the transfer portal and her should be plenty of programs looking his way. Bates has only continued to develop his overall feel for the game since we first watched him in high school, developing his touch and ability to finish in the paint, get stronger, and be an effective presence on the glass. Add on top of that his strong presence on the defensive end, racking up nearly 150 blocks through two years and being a defensive anchor for the Wolfpack, Bates should have the attention of many, especially getting back healthy.

What Was Said By Phenom Hoops:

“Bates already possesses a defensive threat with his length and height, while also being a monster on the boards.  He also continues to show that he can be a threat down in the post with his post moves.  What the staff at Northwood Temple continues to work with Bates is building his confidence and becoming the “alpha dog” they know he can be; face up to the basket and really look to dominate on the court.  He also has continued to work on making his jumper consistent, making him even a bigger threat.” – Phenom Hoops in 2017

“Bates is definitely one to put in the memory bank and your SIM CARD. What you see currently is not the finished product. That being said, Bates has unlimited upside and potential. He’s extremely long and sports an enormous 7’3 wingspan that is accompanied by an equally impressive attitude. Coach Praeger stated, “Bates is an unselfish player. His attitude and interest in learning the game will serve him well in his development.” More importantly, Bates has solid athleticism and plays above the rim. The next step in his development is to get physically stronger which will come in due time. He has passer friendly hands and is also a willing passer out of the post.” – Phenom Hoops in 2016
