On Tuesday, Winston-Salem State officially announced the hiring of Tony Jones to serve as the lead assistant on Corey Thompson’s staff. This opportunity is deserved and long overdue for one of the most genuine, knowledgeable individuals in North Carolina’s basketball scene. Formerly at UNC Pembroke, Seventy-First High School, and (most recently) St. Paul’s High School, Jones has more than earned his stripes in the coaching world.

Amidst the busy travel ball season, Jones joined Phenom Hoops’ staff as a full-time employee. Not only did he provide a high level of professionalism, but his attitude, demeanor, and overall malleability quickly made him a vital team member. He connected with former coaching colleagues, blossomed new relationships, and always stepped up to go the extra mile. Although his long list of intangibles will be difficult to replicate, there’s no replacing the friendship and camaraderie he brought to the table.

Our Rick Lewis echoes this sentiment, stating, “We’re excited about Tony’s opportunity to become an assistant coach at Winston-Salem State University. Tony has worked with Phenom Hoops on a part-time basis for the last two years and became a full-time staff member this past June. Tony is dedicated, knowledgeable, and, most of all, dependable. In just a short time, Tony became like a family member, and he will be sorely missed. Conversely, we’re incredibly excited about his opportunity to fulfill his lifetime dream of becoming a college coach. There is no question that Tony will be a future star at the collegiate level. His work ethic, character, and overall game knowledge will allow him to climb the college coaching ladder. We wish Tony the best of luck.”

No employer wants to see their assets depart. However, allowing someone to spread their wings and flourish calls for celebration. Following the likes of Chris Sause (UNC Pembroke), Alex Biggerstaff (Milligan), Sean Halloran (Elon), Keion Robinson (Wake Forest), Khalil Shakir (Emory and Henry), Jones is the sixth guy in the last six years to advance from Phenom Hoops to the collegiate ranks.

Coach Jones regards his time on staff with gratitude and positivity, “I couldn’t be more thankful for the opportunities that Phenom Hoops granted me over the last 2 years. They are elite at what they do and are even better people. I will miss working and hanging out with everyone. Thank you to Rick Lewis for always being true to his word and welcoming me with open arms. I am grateful for the support, guidance, and camaraderie that I have received from the staff. The professional growth I have accumulated and the friendships I have formed are invaluable. While I am eager to embark on this new chapter, leaving Phenom is a bittersweet feeling. Thank you once again for the trust and encouragement you have shown me. I wish Phenom Hoops continued success and know our paths will cross again in the future.”

The Rams secured a winner with Jones. He has an excellent eye for talent and knows how to connect with others. As Jones embraces his new endeavor, he will always have a massive outcry of supporters from the grassroots community.
