It has been a great year for college basketball so far, and there have been plenty of surprise teams that have been making their mark. One team that the world of college basketball needs to start recognizing must be the FAU Owls, who sit at 22-2 and are ranked in the Top 25 by many outlets. Though the Owls are coming off a tough road loss last week, the Owls have proven to be a tough outing.
They have several strong wins this season, and they also have a 20-game win streak on their record. FAU has proven to win in a variety of ways, whether it has been in a dominant fashion and showcasing its offensive capabilities but also has won tough defensive, close battles.
FAU brings a balanced attack and has plenty of depth to put on the floor; Johnell Davis has led the charge at 13.1 points per game while shooting 41 percent from behind the arc. But the Owls have plenty of weapons that have stepped up at the guard position with Alijah Martin, Nicholas Boyd, Michael Forrest, Bryan Greenlee, Brandon Weatherspoon, and Jalen Gaffney. All of them have seen strong minutes this season and have contributed. Vladislav Goldin leads the way down low, as the center is averaging 10.2 points and 6.2 rebounds in just 20 minutes while others like Giancarlo Rosado, Tre Carroll, Isaiah Gaines, and Brenen Lorient have contributed this season as well.
This is a team that is averaging 77 points per game offensively, giving up only 64 points per game defensively, is strong on the boards (ranking 39th in the country in rebounds per game), and can be extremely dangerous from outside (averaging 9.7 threes per game, 232 total 3pt field goals made).
The Owls have certainly proven themselves this season, and they look to finish strong as they head into tournament play. But from what they have shown so far, their ability to knock down shots from outside, score the ball effectively, win in multiple ways, and their depth, it is time to start recognizing FAU more on a national scale.
