We've had the honor and pleasure of covering 6'1 senior PG Caron Corpening's career over the pass four years. Back in 2012 at our NC Phenom 150 camp, we wrote,''Corpening is another promising young PG in the North Carolina class of 2016. Corpening has speed and quickness and understands the responsibilities of the PG position, which is important for a young player. That being said, we are more impressed with his defensive presence on the court. Corpening is a hawkish 'on the ball defender' and his lateral quickness is superb. Corpening will accept any challenge defensively and his effort guarding the opposing PG is second to none. He absolutely gets after it and not many young prospects take as much pride in their defense as Corpening.'

Unfortunately this past summer, Caron suffered an injury and kept him out of travel ball action during the most important NCAA Live Periods where college coaches can watch players. While this was a minor setback, Caron has bounced back and is the floor general for the Hickory High Tornadoes. Coach by Andy Poplin, Caron is leading the charge as Hickory sports an impressive 12-1 record and Caron Corpening is a major reason for the team's success. First of all, Caron is the consummate PG. Like all great point guards, winning is his first priority and making his team better.

In speaking with his high school coach, Andy Poplin stated,''Caron’s senior year has been wonderful so far.' From a coaches perspective Caron has completely bought into the TEAM first mentality.' We talk all the time in our program about doing the HARD RIGHT.' That is doing what's right for the team even if it may not be what is best for you.' Caron has been that guy for our group.' He has his hands on the ball first almost every possession but has sacrificed some personal numbers to distribute the ball and facilitate for his teammates.' He has found a niche for picking his spots and knocking down the 3, getting to his mid-range jumper or attacking the basket to score or create for a teammate.' Caron continues to be very coachable and serves a coach on the floor.' He is becoming more vocal and works to get people in the right spots.' He has become a rock and someone who we can count on to make the RIGHT play.'

In addition, in speaking with the assistant high school coach, Cassidy McCorkle stated,''As Caron’s coach, I can’t tell you how impressed I am with him full time running our team. I know last year we had him playing off the ball more in which he handled that situation well also, words can’t express how pleased our coaching staff is with his play. Although his scoring is down from 13 to 10 points a game he is shooting the ball more efficiently at 54% from the field and 58% from two point range, on only averaging six shots per game.' All while averaging,'five assists, two rebounds, and three steals, on a team that has three double-digit scores and two more right at 8 points per game. It is an honor to coach him and keep encouraging as the season goes along.'

So often we talk about players that put team before self and this is what Caron Corpening is all about! More importantly, Caron is a winner on and off the court. He sees the big picture and simply 'gets it.' Caron is a low risk, high return player. He's going to be coachable and do the things that are necessary to help his team win.
