On Saturday, Phenom Hoops will travel to Carmel Christian in Matthews, North Carolina to host our sixth annual Phenom Hoops MLK Showcase. The one-day event will begin at noon and the final game will start at 7:30, featuring six games of exciting action between twelve highly talented programs—both from public and private ranks. In preparation for the event, we will take a closer look at each matchup and highlight individual players to monitor…

The sixth and final contest of our MLK Showcase will feature a battle between Weddington (10-4) and Carmel Christian (13-5). Only ten miles apart, these two programs have been incredibly successful over the recent years. Representing the public-school side, Weddington has managed to maintain their standards despite graduating multiple key pieces. UNCG commit KJ Younger has been a legitimate force as the undisputed leader of this group. His impressive all-around production (and general strides as a prospect) has been amazing to watch. Guys like Mason Zepp, Myles Vicks, Jake Ford, and Jaden Nnaji also play meaningful roles for the Warriors. Meanwhile, Carmel Christian is a deep squad who can hurt opponents in various ways. The Cougars have been without Marshall commit Bryce Slay for several games, but his return should bring this group back to its full potential (6-2 with Slay, 7-3 without). That being said, guys like Chandler Kennedy, Daniel Guandolo, and Miles Leaks have each stepped up in Slay’s absence. Eddie David and Braylen Bowman also provide meaningful minutes. Add in the expected atmosphere, and this game will certainly be worth the price of admission.
