North Carolina continues to bring you intriguing talent to watch out for and back in October of 2023, Phenom Hoops learned of a new name coming into town in 2026 Heimir Helgason.  He quickly earned our attention at the NC Sophomore 40, as he showed flashes of his versatility, his fluidity, and his ability to make plays on both sides of the court.

He quickly showed that he has the length and mobility to impact the game defensively, altering shots and being a defensive presence but was also skilled enough to operate inside and out, step outside and knock down shots but also finish around or at the rim. Not long after that at the Carmel Tip-Off, we had this to say:

“Eager to see the development of 2026 Heimir Helgason. Intriguing forward with a fluid feel and just starting to understand the game here in the US.  Can stretch the court and has a long frame to use on both ends.”

In catching up more with Helgason, it seems that he has been continuing to develop his game and understand more of the game here in the US. Playing this summer with Team Curry, he could open a lot more eyes, as college programs are taking notice.

He recently added his first two offers, first coming from Wyoming and then another from Stetson. We were able to catch up with Helgason to talk more about his development and recruitment.

Phenom: How has everything been going this summer overall for you?
Helgason: It’s been great! AAU is very new to me but I’m enjoying it. Team Curry and our staff/Coach Nick Jones have been really great to work with. I like my teammates and it’s fun to play against teams from all over the country.

Phenom: How has your game been developing and what have you been noticing as far as improvement?
Helgason: I like playing team basketball and trying to do the right things. At the same time, I have always enjoyed blocking shots and having an impact defensively. On offense, I’ll take the open shot but don’t like to force things. I’m trying to get better at seeing gaps and spots where I can make a play. I like running the floor and finishing. I’m working hard on ball handling so hopefully that continues to improve.

Phenom: What have you been hearing from schools that have offered?
Helgason: Well, they saw the video and are interested in recruiting me hard. Other schools have called my AAU coach or HS coach asking also. Saying they will come to the live period.

Phenom: What other schools have been expressing interest your way?
Helgason: A bunch follow me on social and a few have called my coaches but I don’t think we can speak until June due to the rules. Just focusing on getting better right now.
