Phenom Hoops was able to sit down and enjoy the annual scrimmage between Oak Hill Academy and Hargrave Military, bringing two of the top programs together to really get the season started. Playing two halves and then a 3rd 10-minute scrimmage, we wanted to bring you a few standouts for each team, looking at Hargrave Military second.
2021 6’5 Miles Kelly
Kelly has such a great length to his game, as he was able to showcase his ability to score from the perimeter, knocking down three-pointers all over the court, put the ball on the deck and rise over defenders, or create for others. Kelly was a lot of trouble with his ability to knock down perimeter shots vs. Oak Hill.
2021 6’0 Jackie Johnson
Getting a chance to watch Johnson, you have to love the quickness and playmaking ability he brought to the floor. He can really push the tempo, maneuvering through defenses, and aggressively getting to the rim and to the line. Johnson’s ability to get to the paint and score or find teammates was impressive, while also using his speed on the defensive end as well. He really made a big impression tonight with his play.
2021 6’2 Jordan Battle
We got one of our few chances to watch Battle last season in the VISAA playoffs, where he went off for 30+. Now he is bringing his game to Hargrave Military and just seemed to be everywhere on the court on both ends. His last name suits him, as he did battle on the floor, getting after it on the boards, attacking defenses on the offensive end, and creating second-chance opportunities.
2021 6’8 IJ Ezuma
The 6’8 big was active in the paint and hustled on the boards. He continues to show his progression in his game, finishing and battling in the paint offensively, creating second-chance opportunities on the boards, and displaying good mobility as a big.
2021 6’3 Tyler Beard
In the first half, Beard really showed his ability to create and find his teammates. He continued to bring that same energy to the floor, getting after it on defense and displaying his vision to find open teammates for shots and easy baskets, despite not being able to find his rhythm scoring-wise.
