Sophomores leading the way for Hopewell

For Hopewell High School, the future looks very bright. Coached by JaRon Goodson, Hopewell is current 2-4 in conference play and 7-9 overall. Below .500% yes, but Hopewell plays in one of the toughest conferences in the state, the NCHSAA 3A/4A Conference 60, known as the Queen City Conference. It's not easy going against the likes of Chambers, North Mecklenburg, Mallard Creek, and West Charlotte. Chambers and North Mecklenburg are two of the top teams in the state regardless of affiliation or classification and West Charlotte is one of the heavy favorites in the 3A.'

That being said, Hopewell is led by the sophomore trio of 5'9 Quay Watson, 6'2 Jullian Mack, and 6'0 Derrick Eley. Watson is averaging 22.1 PPG, 5.2 APG, 4.1 RPG, and 2.7 SPG. Without question, Watson is the sparkplug and floor general for coach JaRon Goodson. We've had the opportunity to watch him in camp settings, travel ball, and in high school, and his performance has always been consistent. With each outing, you know exactly what you are getting and that is hustle and effort. Next up is 6'2 Julian Mack. Mack has really good perimeter shooting skills and has good quickness, end-to-end speed, and a fluid overall game. Mack is averaging 10.7 PPG. Last, 6'0 Derrick Eley also has an excellent floor game and has a nice balance of facilitating and scoring. Eley is averaging 10.4 PPG, 4.4 RPG, and 3.0 APG.'

Currently, the three sophomores average 43.2 PPG while the entire team is averaging 61.9 PPG, which is right at 70% of the scoring. While Hopewell may be a 'tad too young' to compete for a conference championship this season, look for Hopewell and coach JaRon Goodson to make serious noise in the Queen City Conference in years to come.'
