Ben Nicoson

Center Grove High School, Greenwood, Indiana

The Model Student Athlete

When it comes to student athletes, 6'0 junior Ben Nicoson comes to mind. We first got a chance to watch Nicoson up close at the 3rd Annual Indy Top 80 held October 2nd at Westfield High School. Whether it was in stations or in game situations, Nicoson impressed us with his work ethic and 'team first' approach to the game. This should not come as a surprise. He is an outstanding student and sports an impressive 4.4 GPA, not to mention a 1360 on his SAT (1600 scale). In addition to being a first-class student athlete, Nicoson also has his priorities in order in the most important game of life. This March, he will be making a mission trip to the Dominican Republic. To put it mildly, Ben Nicoson is a well-rounded person, excellent grades, and the basketball skills that should be a high priority among D2 schools.

At the Indy Top 80, Nicoson showcased a two-way skill set. We were impressed with his lateral quickness and on the ball defense. He is a hawkish defender and takes as much pride on his defense as his offense, which is rare in camp scenarios. Nicoson understands team defensive principles and his overall understanding of the game offsets any liabilities one may have concerning his size.

In our Indy Top 80 evaluation, we wrote the following.''Nicoson showcased a true fire when it comes to team play. He displayed great vision and moved very well without the ball. He has tremendous basketball IQ. He is a leader on the floor and doesn't turn the ball over. More importantly, he looks to get others involved as he can also create for himself. He pressures the ball well and is a very good point guard.'

Nicoson plays in one of the best conferences in the Midwest and Central Indiana is a hotbed for high school basketball. Not a night goes by where he is not battle tested and has shown the ability to compete. While he may not be the most athletic or flashiest player, he brings a level of toughness, poise, and maturity to the team. Last year, Center Grove finished with an 18-10 record and they hope to add to the win column in the upcoming 2017-18 season. One thing is for certain, Ben Nicoson will approach each game this season like he does everything else. He will bring a relentless work ethic along with the leadership from the point guard position.
