Some players simply find ways to produce in every possible context or setting. These guys can be found at every level of basketball. Whether effortless scorers, physically imposing athletes, or a variety of other archetypes, there are all types of natural producers. Given our viewings in high school, it should’ve been expected that Nick McMullen would ultimately fall under this umbrella. Between his time at Eastern Guilford, Ben L. Smith, Murray State, UNC Asheville, and now Georgia State, his production has truly never wavered.
This season, McMullen is averaging 10.0 PPG and 9.8 RPG while shooting 53% from the floor. He’s also currently tenth in the country for total rebounds and first in the Sun Belt for total rebound percentage. Oddly enough, he’s also doubled as one of the most durable players over his college career—only not finishing first in games played once. McMullen has accumulated 15 double-doubles over the same span. He’s tough, rugged, and knows how to maximize his interior presence on both ends of the floor. McMullen uses his body really well to secure position, ward off opponents, and securely grab the ball. He runs the floor well in transition to capitalize on finishes from drop-offs or filling the lane.
Ultimately, no one should be surprised by the success he’s had in the college game. While his scoring, rebounding, and general consistency are undeniably remarkable, one could argue the fact that McMullen has played over 150 games is as impressive as any achievement. He will likely eclipse the 160-game mark over these next few weeks. McMullen has quietly gone through his college career, finding success at every stop, and concluding things with yet another highly productive season.
