If you missed it recently, Phenom Hoops went out to Concord, NC to check in on the Aces Elite program as they were preparing for the upcoming tournaments. It gave us a glimpse into some intriguing talent on the floor, one of which was 2022 6’7 Toni Akinyelu.
Akinyelu is a small forward from Ardrey Kell, who was a contributor to last year’s successful team, playing in all 11 games and averaging 2.0 points and 1.7 rebounds. He also already holds an offer from Erskine, his first and only offer so far.
But when you watched him on the court and how he operated, there is intrigue with his game. He uses his size well, can create for himself off the dribble, operate inside and out, and finish strong at the rim; also strong on the boards. He is also a versatile defender and can defend multiple positions, while also being disruptive with his long wingspan.
You can definitely see that there is something there with his game, which is why Erskine jumped on him early.
But now, being back at Ardrey Kell next season and with some key guys now gone, it could be a coming-out party for Akinyelu as a senior, something he is excited about.
“I’m definitely excited to play a larger role in next year’s team. We have some great guys leaving this year but I am confident the young players can step up and continue the Ardrey Kell legacy,” Akinyelu told Phenom. “Personally, I have been working on all areas of my game but I have been mostly concentrating on expanding my range to create better shots and become a threat for other teams. I have also been working on my strength and agility to become more explosive and versatile.”
Make sure to watch Akinyelu with the Aces Elite this summer and with Ardrey Kell next high school season, as he looks to take another step in his development.
