Looking to bring a new segment to Phenom Hoops, as we dive into thoughts on players around the country. Phenom continues to bring you all the latest content, including player reports and profiles that we have been seeing on our platforms and throughout the entire year. Well, I’m hoping to dive into more about players, bringing you more into what we have seen and my thoughts. Again, these are just reflections of what I’ve seen as a scout.
Player: Drake Powell
Class: 2024
High School: Northwood HS
AAU: CP3
The class of 2024 in North Carolina is special. We are looking at a class that is deep and has talent from all levels, as it will be interesting to see how this class compares to others in the past. But one player that has really been standing out in my mind is 2024 6’6 Drake Powell.
Powell has been quickly rising up the rankings nationally from several outlets but many could consider that he is ranked too low compared to what he provides and his potential. But it seems that college coaches are holding back, as he has seen his recruitment take off with offers now from North Carolina, Florida State, Georgia, USF, Tennessee, Wake Forest, LSU, Texas A&M, Virginia Tech, Miami, VCU, Appalachian State, Cincinnati, and NC State.
Why do I think he should be ranked high' It is the impact he makes on the court in so many areas of the court as well as what he could ultimately end up being if his trajectory continues the way it has been going. But when you look at his game today both offensively and defensively, Powell provides so much on the floor and is a player that comes out looking to prove himself. Offensively, Powell uses his length extremely well but also has big-time athleticism. With him on the court, he provides another ball-handler on the court and one that makes high IQ players, whether for himself or for others. Powell does a great job in finding his teammates on the court. He also is able to finish high above the rim or finish strong around defenders, while also having such a smooth and confident mid-range jumper. Now, there is still work left with his 3-point shooting, but one can see that he has continued to improve in that area as well.
But what separates him from the rest is his impact in other areas. This is a young man that can make his impact felt on the defensive end as well, using that same length to be extremely disruptive; and he can elevate that even more when he is looking to prove himself even more. We have seen him shut down some big-time prospects in the past, as Powell can be a game-changer on the defensive end. He also uses that athleticism to block shots and be active on the boards.
Overall though, his game has really elevated to another level but honestly, if his trajectory continues and he continues to develop at the rate he has, Powell has a chance to be yet another name to make it to the highest level. With the two-way presence, the IQ, and the potential in his game, it will be interesting to see where he ultimately goes next but Powell is one to really watch out for more if he is able to fulfill his full potential in his game.
