Phenom High School Jamboree Team Preview
Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach
Coach Darren Gore
By Rick Lewis

Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach finished the 2016-17 with a 20-12 record before losing to Zion Williamson and Spartanburg Day in the SCISA AA state championship game. Coach Darren Gore will sorely miss 6'2 Justin Busby and 6'5 Bryce Schneider who graduated. Busby averaged 16.2 PPG and provided steady leadership from the point guard position while Schneider averaged 14.8 PPG. That being said, Coach Gore has a deep roster and plenty of upperclassmen to help lead the way. Christian Academy will kick off the 2017-18 season by playing in the Phenom High School Jamboree on Saturday, November 4th at Proehlific Park in Greensboro, North Carolina. Now, let's take a closer look at the impact players.

6'3 '19 Michael Green

We have watched the growth and development of Michael Green over the past five years when he was just a youngster in middle school. We're talking about a fundamentally sound combo guard who is simply advanced beyond his years in terms of skills, basketball IQ, and overall knowledge of the game. He is the consummate gym rat who is relentlessly working on his craft to become better and better. The southpaw has a silky smooth jump shot with excellent mechanics, extension and follow through that allows him to be a consistent perimeter shooter. What Green lacks in elite level athleticism, he more than makes up with his high skill set and craftiness with the ball. To put it mildly, Michael Green knows how to play the game at a high level. Green averaged 14.3 PPG last season and will be asked to pick up more of the scoring load this upcoming season. Coach Colin Stevens stated, 'Michael has taken his whole game up a notch. His defense is improving. He is a great playmaker and scores at all three levels.'

6'6 '19 Davis Guyton

Davis is a fundamentally sound forward that has a soft shooting touch and terrific range. He can play on the interior or on the perimeter. On the interior, he uses his body extremely well for low post position and utilizes the pump fake quite well. He has passer friendly hands and nifty footwork. More importantly, Davis has a high basketball IQ and has good court vision for his size/position. He is a low risk high return player. He played really well at the SC Top 80 and will use this as motivation for the upcoming season. Last season, Davis averaged only 4.2 PPG, however we strongly feel this could be a huge breakout season for Davis. Coach Colin Stevens stated, 'Davis has really stepped up his game from being a shooter to a scorer. He is a willing passer with good IQ.'

6'0 '18 Robert Guyton

Robert is a coach on the floor. He has excellent court vision and advanced passing skills. While Robert has been used more at the shooting guard position, it is evident that he can transition easily into the point guard position. We're always been impressed with his poise, maturity and calmness displayed on the basketball court. He moves extremely well without the ball and has the ability to use either left or right hand in finishing around the rim. More importantly, he is an efficient perimeter shooter who takes good shots within the framework of the offense. Last year, Robert averaged 7.3 PPG and we expect those numbers to double for the 2017-18 season. Coach Colin Stevens stated, 'Robert is a strong willed player, good spot us shooter and aggressive slasher and rebounder, not to mention a solid defender.'

Best of the Rest

6'7 '18 Sam Woods

Coach Colin Stevens stated, 'Sam has really improved over the past eight months. He is comfortable from 15-feet and finishes better at the rim. Defensively, he block and alters shots.' Woods averaged 7.8 PPG last season and with his improvement is expected to average in double figure scoring and maybe rebounding.

6'5 '19 Jalen Matthews

Coach Colin Stevens stated, 'Jalen is a tough slasher and attacks the rim aggressively. He has the ability to rebound and start the break. His outside shooting his improving and is a solid defender.' Last season, Jalen averaged 5.4 PPG
