While it may seem rapid, Gilyard’s ascent to a sought after Division 1 prospect took both time and patience. Now, the 6’4” combo guard, is heading into his senior season with Division 1 programs calling him left and right to join their program.
Gilyard has been a regular at Phenom events throughout the years. Heading into his freshman year at Mt Tabor Gilyard showed his stuff at the NC Phenom 150 camp, we wrote, “Austin is a pass first PG that enjoys getting his teammates involved in the game. He has good court vision and excellent basketball IQ, but plays unbelievable hard. He is a high motor and plays hard on both ends of the court. Austin has the ability of being an outstanding playmaker”
Fast-forward four years and as Gilyard is entering his senior year he has matured. He is grown to be 6’4”, he has put on muscle and added explosion. However, he has kept that same “excellent IQ” that same “unbelievable motor” and that same “get his team involved” mentality.
After Gilyard’s most recent performance at the NC Phenom 150 camp, we wrote “Gilyard was another one who really took advantage of the opportunity. The 6’4” shooting guard, showed to have great size and an incredible competitive nature. Gilyard handled the ball in the half court set, showed deep range to go along with 3-level scoring ability, and he guarded multiple positions. Gilyard is embarrassingly under the radar right now, but his D1 skill set, D1 frame and 3.7 GPA should turn all that around ASAP.”
Heading into his senior season, Gilyard is now being recruited by the likes of Dartmouth, Campbell, Georgia Southern, Wichita State, and many others. Expect that list to continue to grow as he will have a lot of collegiate eyes on him at Phenom’s North Carolina High School Jamboree on November 5.
