Charlotte Christian (Charlotte, NC)
NCISAA 3A
2 PM vs. Spring Valley (Columbia, SC) at Ben Lippen School in Columbia, SC
Charlotte Christian has a rich basketball history under Head Coach Shonn Brown. Players such as Akil Mitchell (Virginia), Anthony Gill (Virginia), Willis Hall (College of Charleston), Worth Smith (Navy), Carson Sullivan (Penn), Trey Phills (Yale), Patrick Rooks (Clemson), Matthew Fisher Davis (Vanderbilt) and most notably the Curry brothers. 2-time NBA MVP Stephen Curry graduated in 2006 and younger brother Seth Curry (Dallas Mavericks) graduated in 2008.
Coming off a 22-8 year that saw them make a run to the NCISAA 3A quarterfinals, this year’s team is no different. They have 3 players who have already received multiple Division 1 offers, with Blake Preston having committed to his dream school Liberty. They also have the #7 2019 quarterback in the country Garrett Shrader.
This year Charlotte Christian is off to a 7-3 record and a #3 ranking in the loaded NCISAA 3A. They have had a tough schedule to this point already playing in nationally recognized events in both Georgia and DC, having played teams such as Pebblebrook (GA), Greensboro Day (NC), and Gonzaga Collegiate (DC).
Charlotte Christian will come into Phenom’s Capital City Jam playing Spring Valley. This will be a great test in a game jam packed with exciting basketball and college level talent
Now let’s look at Charlotte Christian’s main players
6’9 2018 Blake Preston (Liberty)
Preston committed early to his dream school, Liberty soon after receiving the offer. He is a throw back big man who has great touch and footwork on the block. He can face up and play a pick and pop game out to the 3-point line and is more athletic than one would think. Preston is a strong 2-handed rebounder and plays with a great motor. Had Preston waited in his recruitment he would have picked up double figure offers.
6’1” 2019 JC Tharrington
Tharrington enters this event as one of the smoothest and most effective point guards in the region. He plays efficient and mistake free basketball on the ball and is known as one of the best shooters throughout the region as he is shooting 56% from 3 this year. The high academic Tharrington already carries offers from Appalachian State, Mercer, American, Campbell and Navy.
6’5” 2019 Paul Hudson
Hudson is a new name on the scene but one that demands being known. He is a 200 pound lefty who wields a 7’4” wing span and conjures comparisons to East Carolina All-League junior Kentrell Barkley. Hudson is a high level multi positional defender who plays with great pace on offense. Charlotte Christian lines him up across the floor, putting him on the block, the high post or as a secondary handler where he is a mis-match at each spot. A lot to like with this versatility. He already carries Mercer and Hampton offers.
