New Hanover was one of the top teams in the state of North Carolina this past season, finishing the season with a 24-1 overall record and going undefeated in conference play.  A team loaded with underrated talent, one player that opened our eyes recently was 2023 Khalil Genwright.  When you dive into the WBC Elite program, you can see many of these same names that were producing for the Wildcats this past high school season now doing the same for WBC.  Genwright is one of those players, as he was a standout on several occasions with his strong play and leading his team.

When watching him throughout our last event at the Phenom Challenge, there weren’t many teams that could slow him down when he was getting into the paint.  Using his 6’4 body, Genwright was able to battle through and get around defenders to consistently get paint touches and finishing through contact or at/around the rim.  He plays above the rim and can create his own opportunities off the dribble.  As you look at him more, his blend of size, athleticism, and versatility helps him a lot with his game, as well as creating a ton of mismatches.

Genwright was able to really showcase his scoring ability and the hard work he has put in.  And it will be interesting to see next season at New Hanover, as he is one of the few returners for a team that was loaded with seniors.  After a season in which he averaged eight points a game, he has an opportunity to really step up even more as a player and as a leader.

He is one to watch this summer more and heading into next season.

What Was Said:
“Genwright really put on a scoring show on Day 2, as he can really be a tough matchup for many opponents. He uses his 6’4 frame well to score the ball on all levels, he plays above the rim, and really leaves it all out there on the court; love his energy and motor as he just plays hard. Filled it up for his team towards the end of Day 2.”

“Big guard – 6’4? but plays bigger. Excels in getting downhill and getting paint touches. Proven ability to make good decisions in the lane for himself and his teammates. Capable 3 point shooter that you must close out on. Active rebounder.”
