Getting out and about around North Carolina for games gives Phenom Hoops a chance to check in on all the talent that goes under the radar. Recently, we went out to a game between Jay M. Robinson and Mallard Creek, as the Mavs secured a comeback win in terrific fashion. One player, that we have seen in several other events, continued his strong start to the season, as 2023 Bryson Davis has led the charge for the Mavs at Mallard Creek.
Davis is averaging 17.7 points per game to start the season while also leading the team in assists with 6.1 per game, all have been huge jumps from the seasons before. One of the key leaders for this team, Davis plays with a strong feel on the floor, bringing a balanced game as a playmaker but also a scorer. He makes strong plays and finds his teammates well, leads the attack out in transition, finishes well getting downhill with his strong frame, and can be a good defender as well.
He just knows how to fill it up and step up when needed for his team, making a variety of plays and doing what is needed for his team no matter what. Which it is no surprise that he earned his first offer recently from Johnson C. Smith.
Davis is just another underrated guard that is proving to have a breakout-type season in his junior season.
What Has Been Said by Phenom Hoops:
“He’s a smart, high-motor guard prospect with an unselfish mentality and the understanding of how to effectively operate within his role on either end of the floor. Davis is a capable ball-handler and willing passer with sharp anticipation and the ability to force turnovers at a solid rate… Coach Layman on Davis: “Bryson is a lockdown defender at the point of attack. He’s also quite active on the boards. He possesses a quick first step in getting to the rim. Bryson is an unselfish guard willing to make the extra pass. He’s a good teammate and disciplined defender, especially within the paint. He can continue to work on finishing and shooting the ball with improved consistency.” Davis did a variety of things well at camp and should definitely return as a useful contributor for Mallard Creek next season.”
“The junior guard is one of the leaders on this team and he stepped up in a big way. Davis continues to have a strong showing this season, scoring the ball well, creating for himself and penetrating the defense, while also being effective in finding his teammates for open shots. Davis continues to show that he can be a scoring threat from multiple levels and a leader on the court.”
“Bryson is an intelligent combo guard with a solid build for the high school game. One of the most talented guards I saw today, Davis will be one of the clear leaders in the final stage of Mallard Creek’s rebuild toward constant competitiveness. He constantly showed the ability to get into the lane and knock down floaters, presenting himself as the most talented overall player on this team.”
“He is one that returns and earned valuable experience last season; now he is looking to make an even bigger impact. Davis is a strong point guard and finishes strong around the rim and in transition. He also is a strong defender and shows really good court awareness in helping lead the charge.”
“Davis came up big in the bright lights to really help his team earn a tough win to end Day 1. Scoring 19 of his 25 points, the 2023 guard played with an excellent feel and balance on the floor, but stayed aggressive and created for himself. Really effective all throughout and made several big plays when it counted.”
