Trey Gillenwater 6’2 175 2022 Eastern Mennonite HS, Harrisonburg VA/Team Flight AAU

Trey is a crafty and highly efficient scorer who is a threat from everywhere on the floor. He is a very good shooter from all levels, one of the best three-pointer shooters in the 2022 class in Virginia! Trey is effective both on catch and shoot opportunities as well as pulling up off the dribble, shows good variety as a shooter. His shot mechanics are textbook! He has a variety of pivots and fakes to get his shot off around the rim and has a fantastic touch.

Has an elite feel and IQ and shows a lot of polish and maturity as an offensive player. A good athlete and a crafty ball-handler, Trey uses quick crossovers, in and out dribble moves, and step-backs to create space. He can change speeds and directions well and attacks the rim like a tactician using his solid handle and a wide array of moves to get his shot off. Excellent patience using shot fakes, pass fakes and pivots and is a very good finisher. While he may not be overly explosive off the dribble, he is quick and can beat his defender to get where he wants to with the dribble. Uses jabs and fakes, sets his defender up nicely, and has a quick first step. Trey uses floaters, runners, and scoop shots and is an excellent scorer on the move. He’s a crafty and skillful scorer who knows how to create space to get his shot off against taller defenders and has the handle and variety that allows him to beat defenders in isolations with good regularity. Adding to his impressive offensive profile is his ability to play either guard position effectively and create for teammates as well. Trey is a gifted passer with great vision, very unselfish. He pushes the ball nicely in transition, making great decisions and makes the early pass up the floor.

On the defensive end, he uses solid footwork and has sufficient lateral quickness and athleticism to make an impact. Plays with a chip on his shoulder and shows great anticipation skills. Can really lock in and shut down his opponent. Trey certainly has the potential to be a scholarship level guard and college coaches have already begun to take notice. Trey averaged almost 15ppg last season and had multiple games with double-figure assists while helping to lead Eastern Mennonite to the Virginia Independent Conference Championship and an appearance in the VISAA DIII state title game. Look for another big year and a boost in recruiting after an impressive summer with Team Flight AAU.
