Phenom Open Gym Tour “Calvary Day School”

Phenom Hoop Report travelled to Winston-Salem, North Carolina to cover open gym at Calvary Day School. Last season, Calvary Day finished with a 11-19 season and loss seniors Jackson Gammons (16.9 PPG), Cliff Harris (6.7 PPG), and Jaeden Lanning (5.5 PPG) For most coaches, this would seem like a very challenging year with replacing the senior trio that made huge contributions throughout the season. That being said, this year’s team could and should see a turn around in its record and season. Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the impact players for head coach Joe Rybak.

6’1 2022 James Wilkins'

It was evident in warm ups and during the open scrimmage that 6’1 sophomore guard James Wilkins will be the team leader. We were impressed with poise, maturity and “take charge” mentality. Wilkins is fundamentally sound, has a high basketball IQ and is simply advanced beyond his years in terms of overall skills and maturity. We were impressed with his court vision, precise passing, and ability to get teammates in scoring opportunities. Coach Joe Rybak stated, “James Wilkins is very impressive for his age. He is a three level player on offense and he continues to improve on defense along with other parts of his game. He is an up and coming star in the 2022 class and is already getting. D1 interest.”

6’7 2021 Javon Floyd'

We honestly believe this could be a huge breakout year for 6’6 2021 Javon Floyd. We’re talking about a lengthy, bouncy and effortless jumper who simply gets off the floor quickly, not to mention he has such a smooth and fluid game. In addition, we were very impressed with his ability to talk on both ends of the court, but especially on the defensive side of the ball. Floyd is best going “down hill” but he demonstated time and time again a very effortless and fun game. Coach Joe Rybak stated, “Floyd is a very good defender and shot blocker. He has really improved on his footwork and his shot. He is able to hit the 3-pointers and will help utilize his floor space. He will have a great season and has a very bright future.”

6’7 Charles McClennaham'

Charles McLennaham sports a college ready frame. He handles the ball extremely well for his size/position. He is an adequate shooter with solid shooting mechanics, although at times he could use jost a tad more arch on his shot. Coach Joe Rybak stated, “Charles has a big upside. he can play and guard many different positions. He shoot the outside shoot well, and has garnished some D1 interest.”

Best of the Rest (Coach Rybak comments)

6’7 2020 Jack Hooten '- Jack has much improved footwork and shooting so we should be able to stretch the floor with his ability to shoot the 3. He is a great rebounder. He would be a great D3 player with his versatility.

7″0 2020 'James Mariech – James is very long and is developing his game in every area. He is athletic and can run the floor well. Big upside! Good rebounder and shoot blocker.

'6’1 2020 Mangidas Navikidas-Mac has sees the floor well, and it ready and willing to find the best play for our team.' He is a good shooter and defender.' He will be a great addition to this years team.

6’6 2021 Owen Gullege-Very long, shoots the mid-range and the three ball well, working very hard to improve his game. High ceiling. Good ball skills and court awareness. Can play and guard many positions. Big upside. Potential D1 player.

6’5 2021 Zech Gibson: 'long guard who can shoot the ball.' He is much improved on defense and rebounding. Really excited to see him develop over the next year.
