Phenom Hoops was back in Charlotte for the Phenom New Year’s Bash, bringing some terrific talent from around the area on both the girls’ and boys’ side. Going into the fourth game of the night, 1-of-1 Academy and Gaston Christian hit the court to battle it out.  A very intriguing game between two talented teams, and this one ended up being a battle all throughout.

Both teams were able to go back and forth early on and that would end up being a trend in this game.  1of1 was able to share the wealth early on, going inside and out, but Gaston Christian was able to do much of the same with their big 6’11 center along with the strong guard play. 1of1 was able to hold a one-point lead at the end of the first quarter and still hold that one-point lead at halftime 34-33.

Senior Corey Gaines started to get going for Gaston Christian in the second half, along with Gabriel Mabor, developing a nice inside-and-out tandem to help them earn a 49-45 third-quarter lead.  Going into the fourth quarter, 1of1 started to battle back and ended up tying the game up at 58.  But a momentum swing of free throws helped Gaston quickly go back up by six with a few minutes to go.

Gaston Christian was able to continue to attack and double up their lead with under two minutes to go. 1of1 had a few late threes go down late to cut into the lead but it wasn’t enough, as Gaston Christian secured the victory in what was a hard-fought victory.
