Dershawn Ormon 6'1 135 2023 Denbigh High School, Newport News VA

Dershawn has been very impressive in his first action against varsity competition in the Boo Williams Fall League. He has demonstrated great composure and a solid feel but also displays sound fundamentals and the ability to knock down shots at a good rate while also creating for teammates with the dribble. As you watch his movements on the floor, his composed and confident body language and his overall court demeanor you can see that this freshman is ready and able to be an impact player right now! Dershawn has textbook shot mechanics from his footwork through his high release. He has knocked down shots from all levels and at a very impressive rate most often on catch and shoot opportunities. Even converts contested shots at a good rate. Dershawn knows how to exploit hard closeouts and does a very good job attacking space on balance and with good quickness and shiftiness. He uses crossovers and some inside out dribble action but demonstrates great vision attacking the basket as a threat to not only pull up and hit the jumper but also find cutters and even freeze defenders with his ball skills, look off passes, wraparound passes and overall crafty passing skills. He uses a change of pace nicely and makes good decisions with the basketball. Dershawn is never 'hurried' and is not afraid to take big shots in close games. He is confident and reliable.

On the defensive end, Dershawn really competes and uses his solid footwork nicely to contain the dribble. He shows toughness against bigger ball handlers and stays active and locked in. Makes great reads off the ball getting into passing lanes for steals. Dershawn is an exciting talent; advanced skills, athleticism, high IQ and a high degree of confidence all point to future success. Couple that with a solid work ethic and a willingness to be coached. Dershawn also has the luxury of playing for one of the area's top young coaches in Nick Chamblee who has enjoyed success as both a coach and a player and one who was successful at the same position at the collegiate level. Coach Chamblee was an All Peninsula District guard at Hampton High School and went on to play his college basketball at St Augustine's where he earned All CIAA honors. Coach Chamblee speaks highly of his freshman guard both of his work ethic and his coachability. Coach Chamblee has coached and trained some of the Peninsula's top playmakers over the last couple of years and you can expect Dershawn Ormon to be right up there among the areas top guards in the not too distant future.
