What Was Recently Said: Continuing onto a player who possesses an enticing crossroads between productivity and long-term upside, Jaiquan Clay. He’s a long, athletic forward prospect with a reliable midrange jumper, solid penetration ability, and quality defensive instincts. Clay moves well for his size, forces turnovers against opposing interior players, and runs the floor effectively in transition. He also rebounds the ball at a decent rate on both ends of the floor. Next in his development process is working on the use of his off-hand, as it would make him an even better finisher around the basket. Coach Broome on Clay: “Jaiquan is an athletic big who knows how to make his presence felt inside the paint. He finishes well around the basket. Jaiquan has a lot of potential but needs to work on playing with a better motor.” Clay did a lot of things well during his time at camp, and should be able to immediately contribute as a freshman for High Point Christian.
What To Expect:
While so many players are fixated on insignificant parts of their development, someone like Clay continues to progress into a real problem for opponents. At 6-foot-4 with strength, toughness, and a high motor, he legitimately thrives as a utility piece in every type of setting. Clay’s ability to consistently do a little bit of everything and affect all facets of the game is a huge part of what makes him so valuable. His blend of size, instincts, and athleticism allows him to defend multiple positions and regularly outwork bigger opponents on the glass. Clay is a capable creator with the necessary ball skills to get downhill and finish or set up others. He plays within the team structure and understands how to not force the action on either end. Clay’s unselfish, blue-collar approach allows him to stand out as a difference-maker with any collection of teammates. Expect him to be a staple for High Point Christian over the coming years.
