Jason Nelson 5'10 155 2021 Team Loaded VA/Varina High School (Henrico VA)

So where should I start when commenting on Jason Nelson' The freshman sensation has already led his Varina High School team to a state championship so he has already conquered what all players dream about at the high school level! Maybe I can start with his high IQ, vision, solid passing skills and incredible poise' Or maybe his elite athleticism, quick burst and ability to play at different speeds' Maybe I'll start off highlighting his elite playmaking skills, his mastery at exploiting defensive weaknesses and about how he can take command of a game; or highlight his ability to score from all levels, his deft shooting touch off the dribble and ability to engage defensive bigs and crafty finishing style. Suffice it to say Jason Nelson is one of the most complete, smartest and craftiest point guards in his class in Virginia and very likely beyond! He has excellent ball handling skills and dribbles with purpose. He dominates the one on one matchup using an array of change of pace and change of direction dribble moves and counters that he executes effortlessly. Does a great job finding angles to get to the basket, can stop on a dime and change directions. His starts and stops are abrupt, powerful and quick and along with his impressive array of breakdown dribble moves and quick burst makes him a nightmare defensive assignment. Jason knows how to run a team and elevates the level of play of those around him. Finds scoring opportunities for himself and teammates. Jason can score in bunches if needed and is a very skilled shooter. One of the best aspects of his offensive game is his ability to spread defenses with his shot making ability and three point range, get dribble penetration and make plays off the drive where he does a great job on drive and kick. He shoots well off pull ups, curls, catch and shoot, and spot ups and has sound shot making skills. Jason is an excellent playmaker out of pick-and-roll situations as he can make all the passes and does a great job engaging the defending big, which allows the screener to roll free for easy scores. He can effectively split the pick-and-roll, creating easy opportunities for himself and his teammates. Knows when to make the correct kick out pass when he draws the defense or the drop off passes leading to easy catch and finishes for his teammates around the basket. His ability to execute the pick and roll, deliver pinpoint post passes and to make the right pass in a timely manner has helped to elevate the stock of the young, talented and highly recruited bigs on his Team Loaded VA team, arguably the best 15U team in the country! Jason is comfortable playing in tight spaces, always seems in command, minimizes mistakes, controls tempo. He brings a contagious energy that is most evident defensively where he can take over a game with his relentless pressure on opposing point guards. Uses his hands intelligently and with cat-like quickness can flat out take the ball away from you. His lateral mobility and footwork in general is solid. He has quick feet, stays engaged defensively and his toughness and competitiveness won't allow him to get outworked. He rebounds much bigger than 5'10 as evidence by a 10 rebound performance against rival Highland Springs High School in the Virginia Class 5 state semifinals! He communicates on both ends and has a mature and confident court presence. Jason is really a joy to watch. He's a point guard clinic! Jason Nelson is built for long term success and it will be exciting to watch his career take off! D1 coaches are already taking note; he'll have plenty of options at the D1 level when the time comes. He's a must see!
