West Cabarrus, coached by Jabarr Adams, entered the contest with a 8-4 conference record and 13-12 overall. With a probable bid for the NCHSAA state playoffs, West Cabarrus secured a 77-70 overtime victory over Mooresville. Mooresville, coached by Armard Moore entered the game with a 10-2 conference record and 20-2 overall record. West Cabarrus was swept by Mooresville during the regular season and a win would put them in the inaugural Greater Metro 4A conference tournament championship.
The game was exciting and high level action was on display by both teams. At the end of the first quarter, Mooresville led 15-14, but West Cabarrus took 34-33 halftime lead. The second half was a game of runs, but Mooresville took a 51-49 lead heading into the 4th quarter. Both games laid it all on the floor and it was only fitting that the game was knotted up 65-65 at the end of regulation. That being said, West Cabarrus took control in the overtime period and came away with the 77-70 win. Leading the way for West Carbarrus was 6’2 junior Maleek Green who finished with a team high 22 points and seven rebounds. 6’2 seniors Jaden Smith and Josh Harris finished with 19 and 17 points respectively. Rounding out the double digit scoring was 6’0 Joseph Serra with 13 points, rebounds and five assists. Leading the way for Mooresville was 6’4 senior KC Shaw. Shaw finished with a “double double” with 27 points, 11 rebounds and five assists. In addition, 6’4 Christian Herring and 6’3 Kyrell Shaw both had 11 points . Now, let’s take a closer look at the standout players of the game.
6’4 senior KC Shaw (Mooresville)
While Mooresville came up short in overtime, Shaw was simply sensational, even though he was saddled with four fouls in the fourth quarter. That being said, we think Shaw should be the conference player of the year. The athletic combo guard is ultra-quick off the bounce and was deadly from the midrange. In addition, Shaw can guard multiple positions plays extremely hard on both ends of the court. Shaw finished with a game high 27 points and 11 rebounds. In addition, Shaw had five assists and four blocked shots.
6’0 junior Maleek Green (West Cabarrus)
Maleek Green is a tough downhill guard that finished extremely well with contact. Green finished with 22 points and seven rebounds. More importantly, Green made crucial plays down the stretch. The southpaw is also an active defender and made multiple hustle plays throughout the game. In addition, Green played with tremendous poise and impressed us with this court maturity.
